Introduction: Dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) has become a diet for management of many chronic physical and mental diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of DASH diet on sleep quality and daytime sleepiness. Methods: This study is a randomized, controlled clinical trial. The participants included 563 students and their families. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the DASH or standard diet groups. Pittsburgh and Epworth questionnaires were used to evaluate sleep quality and sleepiness score, respectively. Results: At the end of the study, 240 patients in the intervention group and 195 patients in the control group completed the study. The sleep quality score was reduced after the intervention in the control group only in the students group. In the comparison of changes between groups, after adjusting for confounding variables, the sleep quality score in the DASH diet intervention group was significantly improved compared to the control group. In the intra-group analysis, the daytime sleepiness score was significantly improved in the DASH diet intervention group. For daytime sleepiness score, there was no significant difference between the group receiving DASH diet and the control group. Conclusion: Following the DASH diet improved the total sleep quality and daytime sleepiness score; However, more research is needed to determine the effect of healthy diets on sleep disorders.
