Comparison of the Interleukin-18 Levels and Glycemic Indices of Athletic and Nonathletic Soldiers

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity and its related problems are arising in the world, and it is supposed that the inflammation status can promote insulin resistance and other disorders associated with obesity. Aim of this study is to compare the interleukin- 18 levels and glycemic indices of athletic and nonathletic soldiers.
Method: Forty athletic and non-athletic volunteer soldiers were selected from among staff of Shiraz Military Training Center. Blood samples were collected from all subjects at 8:00 a.m. in fasting condition. Independent t test was used for statistical analysis of data (p≤0.05).
Results: There is no significant difference in levels of interleukin-18 (p=0.52), fasting glucose (p=0.21), insulin (p=0.34) and insulin resistance (p=0.19) of athletic and non-athletic soldiers.
Conclusion: It appears that exercise activity of soldiers is not in an extent to have significant effects on levels of interleukin- 18 and glycemic indices. |
