Background: Due to constant exposure to occupational stress, the personnel of medical emergency centers may experience job burnout in the long term, which itself will affect the quality of their emergency care. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and job burnout among operational staff of pre-hospital emergency services and dispatch centers in Mazandaran province.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional (descriptive-analytical) study used a multi-center sampling method to select 130 personnel from medical emergency and dispatch centers. Data were collected using a demographic/medical questionnaire, an occupational stress questionnaire, and a job burnout questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 20. Data description was performed using frequency and percentage, and data analysis was conducted using parametric tests (independent t-test and analysis of variance), Mann-Whitney U test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. The significance level for all tests was considered 0.05.
Results: The findings of the study showed that the mean occupational stress score of the personnel was 178.65 ± 23.04, indicating moderate to severe occupational stress. Furthermore, the mean job burnout score of the personnel was 64.5 ± 11.93, indicating job burnout among the medical emergency personnel. The correlation test revealed a direct and significant relationship between occupational stress and job burnout (r = 0.174, p = 0.048).
Conclusion: Based on the study findings, it is concluded that the operational emergency staff in Mazandaran province suffer from job burnout, which is associated with their occupational stress.
