Abstract
Introduction: Emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical competency for nurses, particularly in high-stress environments such as emergency departments. Given the intense demands of emergency nursing, the implementation of positive psychological strategies—such as the Gratitude Search Strategy—may play a significant role in enhancing EI. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing a Gratitude Search Strategy on the emotional intelligence of emergency nurses.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest design on 40 nurses working in the emergency department of a military hospital. Participants initially completed the Bradberry and Greaves Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire to assess baseline EI levels. Subsequently, gratitude-focused sessions were conducted in collaboration with nursing managers. Based on the outcomes of these sessions, targeted interventions were designed and implemented to improve specific components of EI. Two months post-intervention, EI levels were reassessed. Data were analyzed using SPSS software with both descriptive and inferential statistics.
Findings: The mean total EI score significantly increased from 121.50±11.27 before the intervention to 137.15±8.77 afterward (t = -11.00, p < 0.001). All four dimensions of EI—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management—showed statistically significant improvements. Moreover, the proportion of nurses with high EI levels rose to 82.5% following the intervention.
Conclusion: The Gratitude Search Strategy proved to be an effective intervention for enhancing emotional intelligence among emergency nurses. Incorporating gratitude-based programs and fostering a culture of appreciation is recommended in healthcare settings, particularly in high-pressure environments such as emergency departments.
