Introduction: The quality of life of nurses is severely affected by job stress and their marital relationships. Occupational stress and burnout can lead to reduced intimacy and increased marital conflicts. One effective solution for reducing these tensions is the use of couple therapy. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Gottman couple therapy in increasing marital intimacy among nurses in Tehran in the year 2024.
Method: This semi-experimental clinical trial with a pre-test–post-test design and a control group examined the effectiveness of Gottman couple therapy on the marital intimacy of married nurses working in Tehran hospitals. Thirty couples (15 in each group) were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in ten sixty-minute sessions of Gottman couple therapy, while the control group received no intervention. Marital intimacy was measured using the Bagarozzi Intimacy Needs Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive(Central index and dispersion) and inferential statistics(Covariance, Paired T, ANCOVA) with SPSS software.
Findings: The mean marital intimacy score for the experimental group was 329.46, and for the control group, it was 287.53. ANCOVA results showed a significant relationship between Gottman couple therapy and intimacy (F=181.327, P<0.001).
Discussion and Conclusion: The findings indicate that Gottman couple therapy significantly increased marital intimacy among nurses in Tehran. This therapeutic method can improve emotional and sexual relationships of couples, especially in high-stress jobs like nursing. Considering the occupational challenges nurses face, Gottman couple therapy provides an effective opportunity to reduce conflicts and enhance positive couple communication.
