Introduction: Anemia is a common finding in ICU and phlebotomy may aggregate this problem resulting in developing or worsening of anemia. The aim of this study is evaluating relationship between anemia and phlebotomy in patients admitted in ICU.
Methods and materials: In this cross sectional study, we evaluated patient`s data admitted for more than one week in Intensive Care Unit of Hajar Hospital for markers of anemia. Also we measured the volume of blood drawn each day and totally during hospitalization. At last we analyzed the relationship between anemia and phlebotomy by SPSS 19.0 through Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
Results: 19 Patients were included in this study. The mean age of patients was 65.8 (SD=17.6) years. The mean of total phlebotomy volume was 229 ml (SD=157.7). The mean difference between Hb levels of patients at the admission time and its minimum level during hospitalization, was 2.8 gr/dl (SD=3.1). The mean difference between HCT of patients at the admission time and its minimum level during hospitalization was 8.7% (SD=10.9). There was no significant relationship between admission time Hb and minimum Hb levels difference and total volume of blood sampling. Beside there was no significant relationship between admission time HCT and minimum HCT difference and total volume of blood sampling.
Conclusion: Because of insufficient sample size and based on observed P-Value, it is necessary to increase sample size for improving statistical power to observe probable association between anemia and phlebotomy in ICU patients in future studies.
