Evaluation of plasma levels of malondialdehyde and total plasma antioxidant capacity after a session of intense intermittent exercise (HIIE) in endurance runners

Introduction: Intense exercise can lead to the production of free radicals and cell damage and subsequent damage caused by oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate a session of intense intermittent exercise on some markers of plasma oxidation and antioxidant system in endurance runners, male and female.
Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 15 endurance runners (9 females and 6 males). Initially, the subjects performed a maximum endurance test (MER). After 72 hours, they performed high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE). Blood samples were taken at the time before and immediately after the HIIE test. Total plasma antioxidant capacity was measured using FRAP, MDA levels by thiobarbituric acid and uric acid levels by the enzymatic colorimetric method.
Results: HITT exercise test did not have a significant effect on malondialdehyde concentration, uric acid and total plasma antioxidant capacity in endurance runners.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of the present study, it can be claimed that high-intensity intermittent exercise is not suitable for the development of fat peroxidation and the response of the anti-oxidation system in professional athletes.
